Trinity alumnus Bill Frey ’77 is among the top 12 one-armed golfers from North America who will travel to Chepstow, Wales, United Kingdom, in September to defend their title in the 2010 Fightmaster Cup.

The North American squad posted a 19½-8½ victory over their European counterparts in the inaugural Fightmaster Cup held at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky., in 2008. The 2010 Fightmaster Cup will be played at the Old Course at St. Pierre Country Club (6,925 yards, par 71). It is the first time the event will be played in Europe.

The Fightmaster Cup is a Ryder Cup-style golf tournament for one-armed golfers. The event is held every two years. Over the last two years North American and European one-armed golfers have competed in various tournaments and earned points to allow them to qualify for the 2010 Fightmaster Cup.

“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to defend our title in Walesthis year,” Frey said. “This event is the pinnacle of our sport, and we are so proud to represent the North American One-Armed Golfers Association in this competition."

The Fightmaster Cup honors Louisville native Don Fightmaster, who lost an arm in 1954 in an accident while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Fightmaster taught himself to play golf one-handed and excelled to the point where Time magazine referred to him as the “Arnold Palmer of amputee golf.”

Fightmaster, 78, has inspired countless young men and women with permanent disabilities to improve their lives through golf. He was the captain of the 2008 North American squad.

The team will depart for Wales on Sept. 5. The opening ceremony for the 2010 Fightmaster Cup will be held Sept. 9, with competition set to begin Sept. 10. There will be two days of four-ball matches and one day of singles matches.
